MIPA Overview: Day Two

July 28, 2015 by Jordan Lampton Leave a Comment

Day two was off to an early start, beginning with breakfast. A popular item on the menu was the eggs, closely followed by the hashbrowns. Up next was the morning session of class. Students briskly walked off to class, many of whom were carrying Starbucks to kick-start their morning. The two and a half hour session was followed by lunch. Among yesterday's selections were … [Read more...] about MIPA Overview: Day Two

Satterthwaite says features are best

July 28, 2015 by Ariana Taylor Leave a Comment

Julia Satterthwaite has a busy life. Between raising her “really cute” sons, Micah and Jonah, with her husband and interning at the Oakland Press writing four to six articles a day, Satterthwaite still finds time to instruct the feature coverage class at MIPA. “Feature Coverage is the best to teach,” Satterthwaite said. “It’s what people really want to read.” The … [Read more...] about Satterthwaite says features are best

July 28, 2015 by Mackenzie Sprecher Leave a Comment

The Beyond the Basics instructed by Julie Price explores the photo basics, but simply a step further. Students learn to properly use their cameras and about the proper setting for their photos. "Right now we're learning how to work with our camera better so we can take better photos," Gabrielle Hall from Ovid Elsie High school said. "It'll help us later when we go back … [Read more...] about Going ‘Beyond the Basics’

Broadcast Bootcamp produces first live newscast

July 28, 2015 by Jordan Lampton Leave a Comment

As soon as you enter the classroom for the Broadcast Bootcamp, you immediately sense an air of organized chaos. As the class dispersed for lunch, they were sent off with a task: come back with at least five … [Read more...] about Broadcast Bootcamp produces first live newscast

“Go big or go home,” were the first words Cheryl Pell said when I walked into the room. One of her many sayings to keep the world of design under control. Her quotes are preached to her students as reminders while they learned about design. “I’m learning a lot about things I had no idea existed,” camper Amy Case said. During this week they will have a variety of … [Read more...] about Campers discover what it’s like when “You’re designing the newspaper”

Why The Curtains Are Blue: The Importance of Reading On Our Empathy

By Christina Karcher | Sophomore | Grosse Pointe South High School [This work comes from the Art of Storytelling class, taught by Julia Satterthwaite.] Ever since I knew how to string letters into words, and those words into sentences, I have loved to read. I would read for hours at a time, fiction about fairies […]

Careers in crayon

By Baity Wagner | senior | Wylie E. Groves High School [This work comes from the Art of Storytelling class, taught by Julia Satterthwaite.] I soaked in school like a sponge. I loved learning about shapes, addition and how to write a proper sentence. Despite the abundance of lessons that are thrown at you in […]
