Students share expectations for 2011 MIPA Journalism Workshops

July 31, 2011 by The Upstart 1 Comment

At the opening ceremony of the 2011 MIPA Summer Journalism Workshops, several students described what they wanted to get from their time at the camp. Here are a few of their responses:

Autumn McCuien, Traverse City, MI (Taking “Writing and Design for Newspapers” with Jody Mackey)
“This is my first year doing newspaper. I like writing. I just think newspaper has more writing in it than yearbook.”

Austin Bowerman, Rochester High School (Taking “Advanced InDesign for Newspaper” with Jim Woehrle)
“I want to learn InDesign better because I’m not very good at it yet, and it’s my responsibility to design the page.”

Brian Palmer, Rochester High School (Taking “Advanced InDesign for Newspaper” with Jim Woehrle)
“Now that we’re editing our own pages, we’re going to need to learn a lot more about InDesign.”

Colin Northrup, Dexter High School (Taking “Sports Coverage” with Jeff Nardone)
“I want to gain the ability to tell a good story.”

Careers in crayon

By Baity Wagner | senior | Wylie E. Groves High School [This work comes from the Art of Storytelling class, taught by Julia Satterthwaite.] I soaked in school like a sponge.
