At the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA), Broadcast News students were assigned to create a package. Alyssa Eddy, Ivy Hetherington, and Carter Gilstad of HH Dow decided to think outside the box for their project. They did this by making a “The Office” themed video featuring staff, including a “Who Done It” style mystery.
The trio went in with a plan and possible script before filming. Luckily, it worked out extremely well for the students without the need of lines given or a planned skit. There was some existing debate regarding who put a Hersey’s kiss on one of the chairs. The group decided to play off this and themed their video around the commotion.
“Going off script allows us to capture much richer emotion, it’s nice to see that side of those working at MIPA and watch them let loose,” Gilstad said.
Rather than the video feeling stiff and manufactured, it was full of humorous unexpected clips that allowed for the video concept to grow. While the staff may not be actors, they sure can be themselves and have fun, which is exactly what happened.
Thinking outside of the box was partly why the group decided to incorporate staff in a video. They noticed that most of their other classmates were featuring classes, which was a contributing factor to the idea.
The creation of this video has helped break the barrier between staff and student, allowing a bond to form between the two. The campers have started to feel at home while attending MIPA after filming the project.
In order to give a sneak peak into their work, the students shared who they think is the correct suspect. The top suspects in their minds are Jeremy, Sara-Beth, and Mikayla. Watch the video on MIPA Today to find out who really did it.
