Planning for the upcoming volleyball tournament, the Tuesday-night issues panel and the variety show are just a few of the many tasks MIPA coordinators are working on during the summer journalism workshop.
“The work can be tough, as I spend a lot of time in the office, but it’s all worth it for the students,” Jeremy Steele, Executive Director of MIPA, said. “I’m really looking forward to the award ceremony; making the prizes for the kids is always my favorite part.”
According to Ali Sobh, senior at Dearborn High School, the volleyball tournament is one of the most exciting events at the camp.
“The mixture of fun and competition makes for a great experience,” Sobh said. “I can’t wait to see which team comes out on top this year.”
The events lined up for this year’s camp are designed to build upon journalistic skills, teamwork and communication, according to Chad Sanders, Director of MIPA summer workshop.
“I hope every student here at MIPA leaves with a full head of knowledge and good memories,” Sanders said. “Us administrators coordinate the events but the students are the ones that make them what they are.”

My name is Vidalia, I am a student in the Opinion writing course this summer. I like this as a short informative article but I feel like you can improve on your story by talking more about the topics you mentioned in the first sentence. The story mainly focuses on volley ball and a little bit about the variety show but there is no mention of the Tuesday panel in the story like in the first sentence. I also feel like you are relying on quotes to much. I know that an article should be eighty percent quotes, but my style of writing helps readers understand the story more easy to understand and all the information needed, to be presented. I would like you to explain more about the events. I would also like to know when they are happening. Overall the story was set up nicely and easy to follow. Thank you.

I’m Onur Toper from Opinion writing. This article really gave a good mix of quotes and descriptions that connected to one another, they helped to make me realize the work that goes into the events and first-hand accounts from them. Not only did this give me the events, but also the reasoning to them as Chad Sanders described in the quote. Lastly, the use of several quotes helped to build the whole article itself with details like the award ceremony, which was well done.

Hi, I’m Sophie, and I’m apart of the Opinion Coverage course. I enjoyed your piece for numerous reasons, the first of which being that your lead corresponded with, “the rule of three,” in which you chose three different activities to exemplify what your article was going to focus on. Furthermore, I liked your incorporation of relevant quotes throughout the article. I appreciate that you chose quotes from a variety including both officials and a student. You showed us a bit of the behind the scenes presence. Overall, I thought the article was well executed.

Hi, I’m Sydney Flaherty from the Opinion Coverage course. I enjoyed your article as I feel it gave a lot of interesting information many students wouldn’t have thought of. I also enjoyed all of the people you interviewed inorder to truly capture the work that goes into MIPA.
