Reality TV personality Matt Smith and international singer, producer and actress Angelica will be interviewed over the phone by students in Jamie Flanagan’s Entertainment Coverage class on Aug. 2, 2011.
“Matt Smith from Animal Planet’s ‘Whale Wars‘ will be great because (the students) will get to know what it’s like to be a TV personality,” Flanagan said.
Smith will not see himself as a celebrity though, Flanagan said, adding that reality TV personalities see themselves as normal people simply doing a job. Smith saves whales for a living; it is not a stunt that he is doing for the money, according to Flanagan.
“He won’t see himself as a star, though; for them it’s just a gig while he’s doing his job saving whales. It is a great show with some great personalities. It’s good publicity for them. It’s great TV,” Flanagan said.
Flanagan said he hopes through discussions of pop songs and how to get a pre-screening of a Blockbuster movie, students will be able to take their entertainment coverage to the next level by Thursday. He said in today’s world of immediate updates via Twitter or Facebook, the playing field has been leveled for young journalists, adding that hopefully, they will be able to compete on a professional level.
