Day three of You’re Designing the Newspaper appears very similar to the two previous ones. The 11 students are sitting against the walls of the room, working on the assigned project of the day. Yesterday’s class ended with the Zombie Run project, although some students are still working on it. Today’s project is to rework any page from the student’s own paper, with the aim of improving it. Adviser Jim McGonnell uses his past experiences to help him teach the class, teaching 39 years in Ohio before retiring.
“I’ve taught at MIPA for 13 years,” McGonnell said. “I really haven’t stopped doing journalism stuff and checking things since I retired, I still speak at nationals and judge at the national conferences.”
Camy Metwally from North Farmington High School, however, is still working on the Zombie Run spread.
“It’s going okay,” Metwally said. “It’s just good for me to get more comfortable with InDesign. The class is really good, too. Projects are definitely the best way to learn here.”
