The ‘jocks’ of MIPA experience extra lessons and lectures outside of their assigned teacher and work. The sports coverage class learn from guest speakers throughout the week. The first being with sports journalist and professor Joanne Gerstner on Monday.
“I really liked her knowledge about things,” Grand Ledge senior Taylor Kennaugh said. “She knew what she was talking about, and wasn’t afraid to be blunt about it.”
Gerstner spoke to the sports writers about being a specialized sports journalist and what it takes to be successful with competition.
“We are really learning about looking at things differently and to not take the typical route,” Kennaugh said.
Outside of guest speakers, the current focus in the class is to get the students focused on blogs, column writing and a focus on finding a face to the many statistics that comes with sports coverage, according to teacher Rod Satterthwaite.
“I’m encouraging them to tell the story behind the story,” Satterthwaite said. “Sports writing is really about the people behind the stats and facts.”
