As “Writing and Design for the Newspaper” student Madissen Miller, an eighth grader from Traverse City East Middle School, said, “I want to take away more knowledge on journalism writing.”
And apparently, so far she is. On Aug. 2, the students in the class, taught by Jody Mackey, learned about writing hard and soft news. They also worked to create good leads, thinking up many different ways to start an article telling about the draft. Many of the students said they enjoy the class, working diligently on each assignment.
Sophomore Julian Reeves from Andover High School said he had no previous experience in journalism, and by the second full day of classes, he said he had already researched and written three or four pieces. By Jason Greene / Upstart Staff
