In 2024 The Impact Radio Station Experience was added to the MIPA class roster. For the last two years they have been offering campers experience in music journalism, interviewing, DJing, audio production, video and podcasting. With hands-on experience in recording studios and the functioning of a radio station.
“It’s such a great week with MIPA,” instructor and Impact broadcast manager Jeremy Whitting said. “We have 10 students who are a part of this class and they’re all super into it, which pretty much happens every year, but it’s cool to see them come in and have different things they’re most passionate about.”
So far, the class has been working on a news package surrounding the Monday press conference with Brian Boesch, as well as recorded interviews.
“We did a little interview of our own where I was actually the one being interviewed,” camper Stone Shells said. “I was playing guitar and they asked me about what I’ve done with [it].”
Working at the radio station itself gives campers the resources and opportunities to create things that cater to their interests in a relatively unstructured manner–the majority of the time spent in class goes to group or individual work time.
“I love to see an idea that starts as just a little thing and blooms into other things,” Whiting said. “It’s always cool to see the students who you don’t necessarily know…and then all of a sudden they turn in all this amazing work throughout the week.”
